Anyrail is also the name of an open source project to provide a free CAD library for simulation and design of railway tracks. The first release was made on 2007-01-01 and it consists in a set of 22 km track files to simulate a 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) 891 mm (3 ft 6 in) gauge railroad with high speed lines or low speed lines, as well as tramways and national railways. The library contains more than 200 km of track selected by French experts. It's mostly aimed at experts, beginner users are advised to download the "AnyRail" application instead, especially for beginner users on Microsoft Windows.
AnyRail is a cross-platform application for railway modelling using the OpenStreetMap database. The application is available on three platforms: Windows, Mac OS X and Linux/Ubuntu. You can also run it on tablets with Android operating system if it's installed the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). The first beta version was released in August 2009, with version 1.0 being released in October 2010. It's free software released under GPL version 3 or later license. The software is not dependent on any commercial or proprietary database. The application is compatible with GPS displays and other features such as track logs and timetables. The current version of the application supports 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in (1,435 mm) track gauge and has a maximum station radius of 500 m (5,000 feet).
The first beta version was released on 2007-01-01, with stable release following 2 months later. The stable release was made on July 2008. Development ceased in December 2011, with the message: "This project has been discontinued" announced at FreeCAD/Projects/GMTrade forum page.
